Raffia Hats and Bags

These beautifully made hats and bags are made using high quality Madagascan raffia.  Raffia is a type of palm leaf which is incredibly strong.  They are designed to be packable making them perfect for holidays, weddings or a picnic in the park.

After the raffia is plaited into a 10 mtr long plait, it is then handsewn onto a hat block to give the hat its shape. It is then steam pressed and trimmed with a raffia twist and a pretty sunflower. Each hat takes about 8 hours to make and no machinery is used. They are available in 4 sizes- 21 to 24.

The raffia bags are constructed in the same way as the hats and are lined with a sunny sunflower poly cotton fabric.

The Designer/maker
Julie Hurst originally began making her hats as a hobby but then established her business in 1997. She is based in Wymondham, Norfolk where she designs and makes her hats and bags. Julie also teaches the art of raffia work and gives talks to local WI and craft groups on the history of hats.

Care and maintenance
The hats and bags are made to be packable. If they become misshapen simply iron with a steam iron and damp tea towel. If they become wet, simply leave to dry in an airy room. Because raffia is a natural material, loose fibres WILL appear. Feel free to give your hat or bag the occasional haircut! (taking care not to cut any sewing threads)
